Kyrgios Set To Fall Outside Top 100 for First Time Since March 2022

Nick Kyrgios will fall out of the ATP Top 100 following his withdrawal from the 2023 Canadian Open in Toronto.

The Australian has rarely featured at ATP events this season as he continues to battle with injuries and form. Kyrgios' last appearance came at the 2023 Stuttgart Open in June when he crashed out in the first round following a shock defeat against Yibing Wu.

Due to the consistent withdrawal from competitions due to injury concerns, Kyrgios has plummeted down the world rankings and is currently 35th. However, according to the latest ranking forecast, the 28-year-old is expected to fall to 90th at the end of this week, while he could drop to 125th after his Toronto admission.

It would be the first time since March 2022 that Kyrgios moved outside the top 100 in the ATP rankings. Since then, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist clawed his way back to a consistent spot around the Top 30, where he remained between August 2022 and June 2023.

But the continuous withdrawals and injury issues keep setting back the 27-year-old, and there is no determined date when he will return to the court. In addition, Kyrgios will miss out on the opportunity to defend his only ATP title on American hard courts from 2022 as he also pulled out of the Citi Open this year.

Moreover, a lower potential ranking for the Australian will mean more difficult qualification for the higher-ranked competitions on the ATP tour. As a result, the longer Kyrgios is away from the court, the more difficult it will be for him to accrue enough points to enter the major competitions. However, if he's injured long enough, the Australian may become eligible for protected ranking.

This season, Kyrgios's fitness troubles began with a knee complaint that ruled him out of the Australian Open. Yet, despite surgery to combat the ongoing issue, the Australian remains sidelined and has missed out on Roland Garros and Wimbledon so far in the 2023 campaign.
