Former ATP World No. 8, Jack Sock, hinted at possibly retiring after losing in the first round of the Houston Open.

Sock had a very successful tennis career. He may not have always been seen as the most talented player, but with his work ethic, he worked his way to the World No. 8 spot in singles and No. 1 in doubles.

Those best days are long gone, but they are memories to be cherished for the four-time ATP singles titlist who even has doubles Grand Slam trophies in his cabinet.

Sock has been dealing with injuries and form struggles in recent years, playing far from the level we’ve seen him reach. It’s no surprise that retirement might be lingering on his mind due to that, but hearing it from his own mouth sent shockwaves through a lot of tennis fans.

Houston, in particular, has been a really great place for Sock, who has had some great moments in the city in the past. It was after losing in the first round at this year’s event that Sock dropped a retirement hint, or at least that’s how many took it.

"One of [my] favorite tournaments. This is going to be my last time here this year, so I just wanted to thank you guys for everything."

As one of his favorite events where he likes to come back over and over again, it doesn’t make much sense to not play at the event unless he doesn’t plan on playing at all.

After all, it was in Houston in 2015 that Sock claimed his maiden ATP trophy, and that’s something that no player forgets. Time will tell whether this might be the final season for Sock, but with the way he phrased it and the emotions with which he conveyed it, it does seem like he has made up his mind, especially after he recently announced his pickleball debut.
