After a breakthrough year in 2022, Jack Draper has shared his excitement towards joining Great Britain for the 2023 Davis Cup.
21-year-old Draper has joined Great Britain as the team prepares for their Davis Cup qualifier in Bogata, Colombia on February 3 and 4. It is the world number 38's first experience of the tournament after receiving a call-up in January and Draper shared his feelings about joining the team.
“I’m very grateful to be a part of this team considering the amazing players that we’ve got. With the support staff and everything, they’ve made me feel really welcome and I’m just really happy to be here.”
Draper had an impressive 2022 season and his strong form helped play a part in his Davis Cup call-up. The 21-year-old won four ATP Challenger titles and was nominated for ‘Most Improved Player of the Year’ and ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the ATP Awards.
While Draper admits he has noticed the step up in quality recently, he says he is enjoying the challenge of facing the world's best.
“All of a sudden, I’m playing at bigger tournaments on the biggest courts and against the best players in the world, which is quite a big transition when you’re coming up. It’s quite a big transition when you’re coming up and tough to take it all in some times, but I’m really enjoying it.”
Draper will work alongside the likes of Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans with Great Britain, who he knows well. The British pair have mentored the world number 38 throughout his youth career.
“Ever since I was a young player, they have supported me, the same as Andy (Murray), and I owe them a lot. I don’t think I’d be where I am now if it wasn’t for their support and backing and making me feel so good as a young player. I love all the boys and I’m excited to be here."
