'I'm Not A Robot': Murray Breaks Down His 'Odd' On-Court Behaviour After Miami Win

| by Zachary Wimer

Andy Murray created some scenes at the 2024 Miami Open recently, which he explained in a funny interview later on.

The Miami Open clash between Murray and Matteo Berrettini was a pretty strange one. Besides a near-fainting episode from Berrettini, it also featured a rather rare comeback win by the Brit these days.

The Italian struggled with the weather, allowing the Brit to turn around the match. It was quite competitive in the final set, as Berrettini left some big chances on the table.

To be honest, it's quite weird that he continued playing after near fainting, but that's hardly the strangest thing that happened in the match.

Murray created some scenes with his odd behavior, which featured him laughing and ranting away the way he usually does. After the match, the Brit explained himself in a funny interview with Sky Sports.

"You were saying I need to be happier on the court in the interview beforehand – so if I’m laughing, that’s not OK, if I’m shouting, that’s not OK, if I’m flat like I was in Australia, that’s not OK."

"It’s very hard for me to get the balance right. I’m very different on the tennis court. I’m not a robot. I’m a bit odd, a bit strange. But I play better when I’m like that."

When it comes to the tennis side of things, Murray was pretty good. He really gave Berrettini a lot of problems and served really well, which is crucial in Miami. It's not that common for him lately, as he generally struggles with it. Overall, he was quite happy with the match.

"I think in terms of the way I played and the important moments in that match, I did a good job. I was down 0-40 near the end when it was 3-2, and I also created a lot of chances to go up a double break as well and hadn't got it, stayed tough there and played some good points."

"I moved well, and dictated a lot of the match, which isn't easy against him. Once I got the balance right against him, I felt like I dictated a lot of the points. I played a smart match when I needed to."
