Jannik Sinner is through to the fourth round of the 2024 US Open, but he hasn't paid much attention to what's going on in other parts of the draw, even though he's aware of it.
Sinner is a player who mostly focuses on what he can do directly to improve his chances. As a player who is on-site and surrounded by other players all the time, he knows what's happening with other players.
The Italian can't really escape that, yet he isn’t overly focused on it. Ultimately, the road to the trophy includes seven matches that he has to win, and it doesn't matter who he plays.
The bottom line is that he needs to win all of those matches, as he can't take any match off. Whether the opponent is Novak Djokovic or some other player doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
He's aware that Carlos Alcaraz lost, and he's also aware that Djokovic was beaten as well. He's aware that this increases his chances, but he's not really concerned by that.
"Everything can happen in this sport, so I try to stay on my side of the net and I'm trying to take [the tournament] day by day. Each opponent is a very tough challenge and [I am] also enjoying every moment on the court. There have been already a couple of upsets, so let's see what's coming."
That's the right approach because, ultimately, what happens in the draw matters little. The only thing that matters for Sinner is what happens in his matches. He has won three of them so far, and there are a few more to go, but he's happy to be where he is with the hope that he can make it further.
"But I'm very happy to still be here and hopefully I can play as many matches as possible. But as I said, we go day by day and then we'll see how it goes."
When asked about the losses of his direct rivals after the match, Sinner underlined that the sport is just unpredictable. Many great players these days can play outstanding tennis on a given day and beat even the best.
"It shows that the sport is unpredictable. Whenever you drop your level a bit.. tennis-wise or if it’s mental or physical, at the end it has a huge impact on the result."
"Both opponents they lost against played some incredible tennis. It happens. I just watch my side and what I have to do. We’ll see what I can do. That’s it."
Sinner has outclassed all of his opponents so far, and he hopes to keep that going regardless of who ends up being in front of him. It’s out of his control anyway, so he wants to keep focusing on what he can control, and that’s his matches and his level. So far, it’s worked extremely well for him.
