Matteo Berrettini had not played since March but showed that none of that mattered, reaching the final of the 2022 Stuttgart Open.
It is not hard to work out that Berrettini's game would be well suited to grass. The big serve, crushing forehands, and the speed that the Italian uses all lend themselves to a very dangerous grass-court player.
However, if somebody had told the Italian he would come into his first tournament back after not playing since March and end up reaching the final, he would have grasped that opportunity with open arms.
That is exactly what has happened in Germany, with the 2021 Wimbledon finalist reaching the final two in Stuttgart, giving him the chance to claim his third grass-court title.
The pressure of playing local favorite Oscar Otte did not seem to play on the mind of the Italian, who kept his cool when it mattered most to see off the German 7-6, 7-6. After the win and speaking to the press, he said:
“I am really happy. Arriving at the tournament, that was the goal [to reach the final]. From thinking about it and actually making it is a big difference."
"I am happy I am here and have another chance to play another final after months without playing and after the first big surgery in my career. This means this is my level and I have proved once again I am comfortable at this level and on this surface. I really like it here at Stuttgart.”
It is now a tough test against Brit Andy Murray in the final for Berrettini, who will have to prove his metal against one of the most experienced and best grass-court players around.
The Scot, having won two Wimbledon titles, certainly knows a thing or two about playing on the grass courts and will be the ultimate test for the Italian.
