Novak Djokovic will begin his 378th week at the top of the world rankings on Monday and is guaranteed to overtake Steffi Graf's previous record of 377 weeks.

The landmark was not guarenteed with Carlos Alcaraz still in action at the Rio Open. But the Spaniard will not be able to knock Djokovic off the top spot.

A special press conference was organised in Belgrade, Serbia, so the 22-time Grand Slam champion could respond to equalling Graf's record. In his speech, Djokovic was thankful for both his family and his team.

"Thank you for the congratulations, I am extremely proud to have set another record, this time the record of Steffi Graf. I have [dedicated] everything in my life to this sport, I am lucky to have a great team of people around me and the unreserved support of my family on this journey,"

However, despite the momentous achievement, Djokovic did not appear to show any signs of letting up just yet. In his speech, the 35-year-old explained how he is now willing to work harder than ever to match the young talent coming through.

"I try to always remind myself where I started from and what it all entailed to get here. At this stage of my career, I feel I have to put in even more effort in every way to keep up with the young challengers."

Djokovic also praised his fellow tennis competitors. Many were quick to praise the Serbian after his achievement, including Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berretini, and he was grateful for their support.

"The generational change is natural, thanks to [Alexander] Zverev and [Matteo] Berretini for their kind words, I appreciate the compliments of the rivals, I have always tried to be fair with my colleagues and to talk. Those who play tennis at that level understand what is needed."

Although he has not featured in an ATP competition since winning a 10th Australian Open title in January, Djokovic is set to return to action next week at the Dubai Championships.
