Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years behind bars in April 2022 after his bankruptcy case, and despite some people feeling sorry for the German, Andy Murray did not share such an opinion.
6-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker was found guilty of hiding £2.5 million worth of assets in order to avoid paying his outstanding debts. Found guilty, the ex-tennis pro now finds himself in prison, serving his 2-and-a-half-year sentence.
Following his conviction, there was an outpour of emotion from all corners of the tennis world. Despite him technically breaking the law and now paying the price for his actions, there has been sympathy from followers.
However, when asked about his views on the situation, Murray did not share those feelings with the fellow Wimbledon champion, who offered his opinion that no one is above the law.
"I didn't really feel particularly emotional about it. He broke the law and if you do that, I don't think you should get special treatment because of who you are or what you've achieved."
"Again, I feel sorry that he's in that situation, but I also feel sorry for the people that he's affected with his decisions as well and what's happened to them. I hope he's okay and that he learns from his mistakes. But I didn't have a particular emotion about it."
Wanting to prepare the best as he can for his match-up against Dominic Thiem, Murray did not further comment on the matter.
It is thought that Becker will spend at least half of his sentence behind bars before being eligible to be considered for parole. It is only then that the German will have his chance of release.
Whether the rest of the tennis world shares Murray's opinion or not, what is certain is that the sporting world has temporarily lost a former legend from the public sphere.
