In a heartbreaking turn of events, Gael Monfils was forced to retire during his match against Ugo Humbert at the 2023 Miami Open due to a persistent wrist injury.
Known for his electrifying on-court presence and remarkable athleticism, Monfils' departure from the tournament marks a disappointing end to his comeback attempt on the ATP Tour.
Since August last year, Monfils has participated in a mere two ATP Tour matches. Hopes were high as he entered the Miami Open, but it quickly became apparent that the Frenchman was struggling with a troublesome wrist.
Despite displaying flashes of his trademark brilliance, Monfils eventually succumbed to the pain and was forced to retire with the score tied at 3-3 in the match against compatriot Ugo Humbert.
Questions now loom regarding Monfils' future on the ATP Tour, as recurring injuries and age increasingly become factors in his performance. When he was returning to his first match in seven months, he said:
“It’s been a long time. I won’t lie, I missed being on the Tour playing, competing, challenging myself. Now I just have the feeling [of love with the fans]. Actually Indian Wells is great because you have fans very close on the practice court. You can feel the energy.”
Ugo Humbert, Monfils' compatriot, and opponent in the match, expressed his sympathy, acknowledging the difficult decision Monfils had to make.
Humbert will now face 29th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in the next round of the 2023 Miami Open. As the Serbian is one of the lower-ranked seeded players at the tournament, it presented both Frenchmen with a great opportunity to make it to the third round of the event.
Yet, that dream is now over for Monfils, who will focus on recovering for the clay-court part of the season, which concludes with a Grand Slam tournament in the capital of his homeland, France.
