Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from professional tennis at the 2024 Davis Cup Final 8, and his announcement was accompanied by an emotional video.
The Spanish player has enjoyed a successful tennis career on the ATP Tour. He won 92 career titles, 22 of which were Grand Slams. He held the World No. 1 spot for 209 weeks, and deservedly, he is called the greatest clay-court tennis player of all time.
Regardless of whether someone supports Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Roger Federer, there is one thing that every tennis fan in the world can agree on: Nadal is the greatest player to step on a clay court.
However, every career ends, even that of the greatest, and Nadal couldn't avoid it. In the past two years, he struggled with injuries, so much so that it became increasingly obvious that the 2024 season would be his last on the ATP Tour.
Nadal announced his retirement from tennis on October 10th by posting an emotional video lasting four minutes and 45 seconds across his social media profiles.
In the video, he spoke about his injury struggles, his illustrious tennis career, his beginnings, and his gratitude for getting to experience all that he got to experience in the past two decades.
Nadal also addressed his family, thanking his mother, Ana Maria, his wife, whom he calls Mery, sister Maribel, uncle Toni, and father Sebastian. Last but not least, in a really emotional retirement video, Nadal also thanked all of his fans around the world. His full retirement message can be read below.
"Hello everyone, I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis. The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make."
"But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end, and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined."
"But I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country. I think I’ve come full circle, since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004."
"I feel super, super lucky for all the things I’ve been able to experience. I want to thank the entire tennis industry, all the people involved in this sport: my long-time colleagues, especially my great rivals. I have spent many, many hours with them, and I have lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life."
