Dominic Thiem is set to make a return to Indian Wells for the first time since 2019 after getting a wild card entry.
The Austrian player didn't have an ideal start to the 2023 season. He lost in Adelaide without winning a set, he lost in three sets at the Australian Open, and he also lost to Davis Cup matches against Borna Gojo and Borna Coric.
However, his season seemingly started turning around at the 2023 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, where Thiem finally recorded his first win of the season.
Shortly after that win, more good news awaited the former ATP World No. 3 player, as he was given a wild card to compete at the 2023 Indian Wells Open, which is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Thiem has not played in Indian Wells since 2019, which was a great year for him in the Californian desert. He became champion in 2019 but much like the US Open, Thiem never got the chance to defend his title.
Now, he will be ready to return to the courts in Indian Wells, marking his seventh appearance at the event. Before winning the tournament in 2019, his best result was a quarter-final in 2017.
The Indian Wells Open tournament organizers announced the wild card for Thiem via their social media accounts, and the former US Open winner also added a short video message for the fans, obviously looking forward to making an appearance at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
"Hello Indian Wells! Today, I received the great message that I will get a wild card for the 2023 BNP Paribas Open. It’s unbelievable news for me as it’s a tournament I love and it’s going to be the first time I played there since I won the tournament in 2019. So looking forward to seeing you all there. Thank you!"
