Novak Djokovic has explained how he uses extensive time away from his family as a key motivator to win.
Djokovic is enjoying another trophy-laden season in 2023, with the US Open, French Open, and Australian Open titles all secured. The Serbian will also return to singles action for the first time since his triumph at Flushing Meadows in September as he enters the 2023 Paris Masters.
But, ahead of his return to Paris this week, Djokovic shared some of the difficulties of travelling during the tennis season whilst speaking to Eurosport. In particular, the 36-year-old said being away from his family is one of the greatest challenges, but it is a situation the 24-time Grand Slam champion uses to his advantage.
"I'm as flawed a human being as can be. I need even more extra motivation nowadays at this later stages of my career than maybe what I needed five years ago or 10 years ago. Things are different. My life is evolving."
"It breaks my heart every time I leave them. So when I travel, when I go somewhere, I really want to win. I want to make that travel worth it."
Throughout the 2023 campaign, Djokovic has changed his approach, which is now largely centred around being competitive in the four Grand Slams and higher-ranked competitions.
The new way of targetting the major events also helps the world number one to balance time between remaining at the top of his game and spending time with his family.
Ultimately, the tactic has worked as Djokovic has the three 2023 Grand Slam titles to his name, along with a Wimbledon final and a Cincinnati Masters victory.
Also, while Djokovic aims to spend more time with his family, he also admitted recently how he's planning to end the year as world number one - perhaps hinting that he has no signs of slowing down yet.
