Wimbledon angered many fans by creating a promotional campaign for the 2023 edition that barely featured Novak Djokovic.
Wimbledon is the most famous tennis event in the year but it's not one of the slickest. Yes, 99 percent of it goes really smoothly but when they have an 'oopsie' it's quite a one. We've seen years of campaigns before they finally relaxed a notorious rule that troubled a lot of women during the event. We've seen loud calls to abolish some other rules but some of those rules are what make Wimbledon...Wimbledon.
They made another oopsie this year which left fans really angered. The promotional material for this year's event was done very well except for the fact that it's missing Novak Djokovic. It's not entirely missing it but for a player who won the event 7 times, 4 of the latest editions no less, he was barely featured. And when we say barely we mean barely.
The 'hype video' features Djokovic for maybe one second at the end of it as the defending champion while the promotional poster doesn't feature him at all. Those types of posters are very common for events and generally, the two first players inward are the defending champions but not this time. Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz shine on the poster, two worthy and exciting players but it's left many fans angered over the choices made.
There has been a long history of Djokovic fans arguing that there is an obvious bias against Djokovic from the British side. There are arguments for it and arguments against but he's not gotten the red carpet that Roger Federer got, although that's not exclusive to Wimbledon.
What's even more perplexing is the fact that Wimbledon released a statement about the promotional material where they named a lot of notable players but not Djokovic again. It includes names like Federer and Nadal, Borg and McEnroe but not the actual current defending champion. Elena Rybakina hasn't been named either which makes it even more strange.
Each montage heroes and immortalises iconic Wimbledon moments from the likes of Serena and Venus Williams, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe juxtaposing them with contemporary history makers and rising stars like Coco Gauff, Nick Kyrgios, Ons Jabeur and Alfie Hewett.
