Novak Djokovic has applied for entry to the United States to play in both of the upcoming ATP 1000 events in the United States next month.

The affectionately termed 'Sunshine Double' consists of the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells - often known as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam - and Miami. Novak's brother Djordje Djokovic told Serbian news agency Tanjug today that the World No. 1, his elder brother, has submitted all the required paperwork in order to enter the country.

In what has been widely documented news, Novak Djokovic is still unable to enter the United States due to the fact that he is unvaccinated against Covid-19 and continue to refuse to be so.

However, the United States government have reportedly agreed to lift the measures that require vaccination for entry to the country in May, should nothing change with the Covid situation between now and then.

This will come as very welcome news to the Djokovic camp, as it means the 22-time Grand Slam champion will be able to compete at the US Open at the end of August. But it comes too late for him currently to be able to enter the States to play Indian Wells and Miami.

Unfortunately, it is out of our hands. Novak needs to get a special permission to enter, considering that the USA still doesn’t let unvaccinated foreigners into the country, which is unbelievable, considering that we have seen big sporting manifestations with unvaccinated athletes throughout the world.

Tournament director of Indian Wells, meanwhile, has said that he hopes Djokovic will be allowed to enter the country and play.

It would be nice to see if we could maybe lift those (restrictions) a little earlier and have him come to play Indian Wells and Miami. I think he wants to play, so we should give him the chance. Hopefully, we can have him there. I mean, it would be a disgrace in my eyes if he wasn’t coming to these events, or not allowed to come.
