Dimitrov Moves Into Shanghai Masters Semifinals In Bid To Win First Title Since 2017

Grigor Dimitrov is having the best season since 2017, and he's proving it also at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, as he bested Chile's Nicolas Jarry.

The Bulgarian seemingly peaked back in 2017, when he managed to win the ATP Finals, and despite always hovering around the Top 20 since then, Dimitrov never managed to win another title.

It may seem incredible and unbelievable, but it's true, and the six-year streak may end now, at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, a tournament, where Dimitrov managed to stun Carlos Alcaraz.

After beating the young Spaniard, and previously ousting Karen Khachanov and Aleksandar Vukic, the Bulgarian took on Nicolas Jarry, who was also having a great week after beating the likes of Lorenzo Sonego and Diego Schwartzman.

But it's difficult to face someone in such for that the Bulgarian has right now. After winning 49 matches in 2017, Dimitrov never managed to get the number in the wins column past 26, yet, this year, he has already 36 victories to his name.

He started well to add one of those against Jarry. Despite not using a break point in the sixth game, Dimitrov was perfect in the tie-break, earning himself two mini-breaks and winning the tie-break of the first set 7-2.

The Bulgarian never allowed his opponent to have a break point, and despite using only one of five break points that he had in the match, it was enough to overcome Jarry, who fired 13 aces in the match and won 89% of points after his serve.

However, when it came to the second serve, the Chilean won only eight out of 20 rallies, and Dimitrov could take advantage of that, winning 7-6(2), 6-4 in an hour and 40 minutes.

In the semifinals of the 2023 Shanghai Masters, he'll await the winner of the match between the fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev and the 32nd-seeded Ugo Humbert.
