'Worst Thing That Can Happen': Nadal's Withdrawal Saddens Dimitrov After Brisbane Win

Grigor Dimitrov was disappointed to hear the news about Rafael Nadal withdrawing from the Australian Open.

The Bulgarian had an amazing start to the new season. Dimitrov won the Brisbane International by defeating Holger Rune. He did this with an exceptional performance against the Dane.

That triumph was Dimitrov's first title since 2017, and a big moment for him. Yet, the former ATP Finals champion also took a chance to reflect on the huge news that Nadal would not be playing at the Australian Open.

The legendary Spaniard had returned after nearly a year out at the Brisbane International, but a slight issue in the same hip area that caused him to be out for so long led to Nadal withdrawing.

Dimitrov was unhappy about the news, which he found out during his post-match press conference in Brisbane.

"This is the worst thing that can happen. I don't know. I hope it's not too bad, for sure. I actually have a practice with him this week. I guess that is not going to happen."

It is nice to see Dimitrov caring about one of his fellow colleagues. He is known as one of the nicest guys on the ATP Tour, and this shows it again.

Dimitrov then elaborated on his respect for Nadal by stating that he enjoys simply watching Nadal practicing.

"I watched him practice a few times here. I always like watching him play regardless whether it's a practice or a match."

The Bulgarian then gave the time of the season he hoped Nadal would be back for. This was the clay court season, which the 14-time French Open champion has dominated throughout his career.

"I really hope to see him back at least for the clay. This is something I can never get bored of watching, even though it's no fun playing."
