Chris Evert came to the defence of recently-crowned US Open champion Novak Djokovic following some slight criticism from Rennae Stubbs on social media.
Novak Djokovic remains one of the more dominant forces in men's tennis and has added three Grand Slam titles to his name this season alone. He managed to equal the record for most major titles won when he claimed the US Open title merely weeks ago. He now has a huge 24 Grand Slam titles.
Most of the debate over the years has been whether Djokovic is held in as high regard as his two biggest rivals of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Rennae Stubbs touched upon this on social media as she attempted to delve into the Serbian's biggest motivations in the sport.
"I think Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal definitely personified wanting to win a lot but it is obsessive to Novak and you can see it. He wants to put the numbers up because he knows he is not going to be as popular as Roger and Rafa."
Stubbs may have raised a few good points, but it can be argued that Djokovic's dedication to the sport comes from a burning desire to be the very best beyond any reasonable doubt. His tendency to break most of the modern records in the sport suggests he is heading in that direction.
Chris Evert leaped to the defence of Djokovic as she stated that Djokovic's achievements on the court should be the only thing that matters. The American feels his popularity in comparison to his rivals isn't of great importance.
"To me, it doesn't matter where his motivation to win comes from, the fact is, he's passing the other two and should be admired for his achievements and his records."
As time goes on and Djokovic continues to excel at the top of the game, it feels like the Serbian is now gaining the recognition he deserves.
