Alexander Zverev faced Carlos Alcaraz in the 2022 Madrid Open final, and after the final, he called him the best player in the world.
The Madrid Open final gave fans a chance to watch Alcaraz take on Zverev. As a former champion of the event, Zverev is well-versed on the Madrid courts, however, he proved no match for the young Spaniard, who won the match without too much trouble.
Alcaraz has been brilliant all week long, earning wins over legendary players such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. He bested them back-to-back to find himself in the final, and he didn’t really have any problems in the final at all.
The final score was 6-3, 6-1 for the Spaniard, who needed only one hour to beat the German. It was the first time the Spaniard beat Zverev and the German had some really nice words to say about Alcaraz.
Zverev called him the best player in the world right now, and after such a run, it’s kind of hard to argue against that.
"I think right now you are the best player in the world. Even though you are still five years old, you’re still beating us all so it’s great to see for tennis that we have such a new superstar who is gonna win so many grand slams, gonna be world no 1, and I think gonna win this tournament so many times."
Despite losing in the final, Zverev will still be happy about the run he had because it was a confidence-building run for him, and now he will be looking forward to the Italian Open and the French Open. With the way he’s played so far, it might be really tough to beat him.
Still, he might run into Alcaraz, who also looks like one of the favorites for the French Open, despite withdrawing from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.
