Fresh off the back of an Argentinian sporting story for the ages, one that will doubtless become one of those frozen-in-time moments for years to come, the country may yet be celebrating another redemption tale.

Juan Martin Del Potro, one of tennis's most adored sons, has again teased fans all across the world he could make a return to competitive tennis.

The former World No.3, although not officially retired from the game, bode an emotional farewell in February 2022 to a home Buenos Aires crowd at the Argentina Open when losing to compatriot Federico Delbonis.

Injuries appeared to have finally defeated the 34-year-old after a career plagued by them, in which he finally accepted he would struggle to return to the level he expected of himself.

However, last week he refused to rule out a return to the US Open, an event he won for his only major in 2009, when asked if Argentina won the World Cup would he play New York?, he replied “Come on, I do my best.”

That Tweet promoted the ATP Tour Twitter account to get involved, sending Delpo the 'open eyes' emoji - often used when someone is surprised at something.

The Argentine eventually responded to the men's governing body by cryptically saying he would "update in a few days!" alongside an Argentina flag and a trophy emoji.

Could we see Delpo on court again?

If the tweet means what fans want it to mean, and Del Potro does return to tennis - possibly at February's Argentina Open - it would be a massive but welcome U-turn for one of the sports great names.

He is one of the games good guys, popular wherever he goes and someone who harks back to tennis lovers favourite era, the halcyon days of the early 2010s.

He may not be as high profile as footballer Leo Messi - not many people are anymore - who finally got his hands on that illusive World Cup trophy, but many in Delpo's home country and around the tennis world would surely celebrate seeing him on court again.

Can you imagine seeing him at a Slam in 2023?
