Tennis commentator, Patrick McEnroe, has revealed that he believes the best tennis player in the world right now is Novak Djokovic - and that it is not a close call.

Writing on social media in the past few days, McEnroe caused the usual flurry of agreement and dissent with his comments.

Messaging in the aftermath of a record-equalling sixth ATP Finals title for the Serb, McEnroe said, "Right now @DjokerNole is the best tennis player on the planet. Period. End of story."

One user was quick to give her opinion on the matter, writing, "He just doesn’t have that “it” factor like Rafa and Roger. He is a great player for sure. He just missed, it".

Others were quick agree, with one user noting "When I see Novak miss his shots, i find it hard to believe 😬😜 that's how perfect he has become !! Obviously, the only way to stop him is... Anybody's guess which i will not spell out ! That means I would hate to see him not play a tournament".

Djokovic remains a divisive figure for some of his previous off-court behaviour, not least admitting to breaking Covid-19 guidelines by meeting with a photographer when he knew he'd tested positive for the virus.

However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for his detractors to find any real flaws in his tennis, such has been his level in the second half of this season.

It is quite a remarkable feat that he was able to win Wimbledon, then triumph in 18 out of his last 19 matches, having had to sit out the entire North American hard court swing.

The facts remain that Rafael Nadal has one more Grand Slam, and that Carlos Alcaraz is the current World No. 1. Yet, for some, Djokovic's recent form gives more than enough evidence to suggest that he is indeed still the best player on the planet.
