'As Long As You're Not Cocky': Rune Praised For His 'Fearlessness'

Holger Rune has been widely described as a confident player on the court because there is a lot of fearlessness in him.

There are various ways you can show respect on a tennis court. Some argue that giving your best against your opponent is a great way of showing respect despite a 6-0 6-0 scoreline looking very disrespectful.

Some argue that showing a certain dose of fear against a legendary player demonstrates your respect for him. In the case of Holger Rune, his respect mostly comes out through words.

When he's on the court, the Dane doesn't want to show any unnecessary respect, showing his confidence. That's gotten him in some trouble with fans in the past who perceived him to be quite cocky.

He dismissed those claims simply stating that he's very passionate about the court, which, to be fair, is true. Eurosport's Alex Corretja says his public perception comes down to him being utterly fearless on the court.

The Spaniard did confirm that it's a pretty fine line to walk between being fearless and overly cocky.

Holger is fearless. He's young and he's just going with the flow. He feels like he can be in top of the world and he says it. It's great. I like when they say those things.

As long as you are not cocky, as long as you are not someone that doesn't show respect for the opponents, as long as you understand that you can be very ambitious, but at the same time, it's very good to be humble because you can have these high expectations, but you need to know how difficult they are.

His fearless approach suited him well so far. He's beaten Novak Djokovic a couple of times exactly because he didn't feat standing opposite from him on a tennis court. It also hurt him because he struggled greatly during the summer when things didn't go well.

He kept playing the way he used to, but his form was off, and he kept losing without changing anything. That's when Boris Becker came in to steady the ship, but the fearless approach must remain a staple in his game. It will suit him well in his pursuit of the top, according to Corretja.

I think Holger Rune, he came up in the tour and he felt like, ‘No, I can beat this guy. The best in history? I don't care’ Well, it's good, but then you need to know how to do it in order not to become someone who has expectations that are not where they should be. But I think Holger can aim high because he's got the potential.
