A man poking at Andy Murray's hip area just as he's off to an extremely good start to his grass season is a deeply unwelcome sight.
Andy Murray was visibly injury-stricken during the 2022 Stuttgart Open final match against Matteo Berrettini.
Murray was back playing some of his best tennis on grass this year. He reached the semi-finals of the Surbiton Challenger last week and went one round better in Stuttgart, reaching his second final of the season.
Murray, who withdrew from Roland Garros last month to start his grass-court campaign earlier, has been vindicated so far by that decision as he appears to have rediscovered his form from the past on one of his favorite surfaces.
But the Scotsman lived through a nightmare during the Stuttgart final as he picked up an injury to his hip and was complaining to his coaching team during a medical timeout.
"From the back it's fine but there's no chance I can serve properly. That's what happens when you have those big breaks."
He took another medical timeout late in the third set but could prevent the Italian from closing out the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. During the time he spent with the trainer, the three-time Grand Slam champion received some massage on his groin/abdomen.
It's unclear what the issue was at first glance or whether Murray might have pulled a muscle in the match. The Briton's fans are hoping it's nothing serious with just a few weeks until the start of Wimbledon.
"Sorry I couldn’t get over the line today but there has been a lot of progress the last few weeks. I’m looking forward to what the future has to hold and feeling a lot better about my game. Hopefully my body can hold up a little while longer, so I can keep playing matches like this."
Murray will probably undergo scans to ascertain the nature of the injury and how serious it is. For now he wants to compete at Wimbledon, which is the most important tournament for him.
