The coach of
Carlos Alcaraz, Juan Carlos Ferrero, explained after the
Wimbledon final that they took elements from all great players leading up to the grass-court Slam.
Ferrero has been working with Alcaraz for a while now, and the former Spanish number one has been doing an excellent job with the youngster. Working with a supremely talented player certainly helps, but Alcaraz never stops referencing the lessons Ferrero taught him, showing how impactful the coach is on him.
Being a former ATP World No. 1 certainly makes Ferrero very qualified to teach a young player around, and so far it's been working really well for the duo. Both are satisfied with the progression, especially after the recent
Wimbledon triumph.
Speaking to
Eurosport after the final, Ferrero admitted that they took bits and pieces from other legendary players before the event, which is always a good idea.
He named a few legends who did well on the surface in the past, as the 20-year-old got inspired by
Andy Murray,
Roger Federer, and also his final opponent,
Novak Djokovic.
"It's very difficult to say, I think he takes things on board very quickly, and we've also seen a lot of videos of players that move very quickly here. So, we copied a little of Murray, Roger and Novak, and he tries to copy a little bit the same. In the end, it wasn't easy, but we did it."
Having plans is vital, especially when playing some of the best, but sometimes the plan doesn't need to work. Sometimes it takes
"cojones" as Alcaraz likes to say and he had them in the final in London, and it proved to be crucial.
"We said that he would have to play more or less the same level that he played against Medvedev. Medvedev is on the baseline all the time and Carlos likes to use the slice to bring the opponent to the net. That was something we needed to do against Novak, so it was one of the keys to break his rhythm. In the end, I think he was very brave in the way he finished the match."
