Alcaraz 'Wanted To Forget Putting On A Show' During Big Struggles At Roland Garros

Carlos Alcaraz tends to get caught up in trying to put on a show during a match, and he had to go away from that in his most recent match at the 2024 Roland Garros to win it.

Alcaraz continued his French Open campaign with a solid showing and a win over Jesper de Jong. The match was complicated because it was very different from the one he had in the previous round.

In the opening round, it was a simple three-set win for the Spaniard, while his second round was a bit different. He dropped a set 2-6 and flirted with dropping a second set after losing his serve early in the fourth set.

According to the 21-year-old, he dropped a set because he got caught up in trying to put on a show with some extravagant shots. He made 15 unforced errors in that set, while playing only eight games.

That's resulted in two unforced errors per game, which was way too many. That's why he realized that he needed to calm down and simply try to win the match instead of putting on a show.

"The 3rd set I thought I have to forget about putting on a show and try to give myself a chance to be in the rally 5 or 6 or 7 balls every point. It was difficult for me to do it. I was in trouble a bit."

For a while, Alcaraz looked really in trouble and without a good idea of what to do. He was able to overcome that and win the match with a furious run at the end of the fourth set. That was very important because he really didn't need any more complications.

"Really happy to do it at the end. Obviously I think during the whole match we both put on a great show. Drop shots and volleys. I think he did it better than me."
