Carlos Alcaraz sent a message of support to the families of those who lost their loved ones in a tragic nightclub fire in his native Murcia.
The 20-year-old who is over 5,000 miles away in Beijing playing at the China Open, learned of the devastating news that has gripped the Iberian Peninsula and Spain at large. International media outlets report that at least 13 people have died.
There are fears that the death toll could rise as 14 more people were unaccounted for according to the Police. Emergency personnel are searching for the lost attendees at the club after the blaze. The fire broke out on Sunday morning in the Fonda Milagros nightclub, the epicenter, before spreading to adjoining clubs.
Alcaraz was born and bred in El Palmar, the most populated district in Murcia with over 20,000 inhabitants. Conspicuously affected by the events back home, Alcaraz posted on social media platform X his shock and sent his message of support to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy, inscribing prayer and broken heart emojis.
"Very shocked by the terrible news coming from Murcia after the fire in several nightclubs this past morning... My condolences to the families of the deceased and a huge hug to all those affected."- Alcaraz paid his respects to the victims of the fire tragedy on X
Alcaraz is actively in the competition this month. Playing in Beijing ATP's famed Asian swing for the first time in his career, he booked his place in the last eight stages of the China Open with a 6-2, 6-2 win over fellow Next Gen star Lorenzo Musetti.
Alcaraz, the top seed, is yet to drop a set in Beijing as he prepares to confront seventh seed Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal on Monday. Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 3-0 and will meet for the first time since the 2022 US Open final.
