One year after beating Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon semi-final, Carlos Alcaraz did it again, with the only difference being the number of sets played.
The two have played really solid tennis at Wimbledon, even though Alcaraz wasn't as sharp as he was last year. Many thought that difference in level might give the Russian a small chance to upset the Spaniard because he's done it in the past.
He bested Alcaraz at last year's US Open, and this match also started that way. The Russian took an early break in the opening set, as Alcaraz struggled again at the start. He's dropped a few first sets this week but always found a way to respond.
He responded this time around during the set, breaking back, but he couldn't win the set, so it ended up in a tie-break. However, it might not have even reached the tie-break, as Medvedev swore at the umpire, which required the supervisor to come to the court, after not being happy with one of the calls, just barely avoiding a disqualification.
Still, the match continued, and the Russian player won the tie-break 7-1, as Alcaraz missed a bit too much. After dropping the opening set, the Spanish player improved his level once again.
He took an early break in the second set to outplay Medvedev 6-3. He continued playing well in the next set and won it as well, this time 6-4, even though Medvedev did have some smaller chances at times.
The Spaniard just outhit the Russian for the entire match, which also happened last year. That's generally been Medvedev's problem with the youngster. If the Spaniard doesn't beat himself, he wins the matchup comfortably.
Alcaraz took an early break in the final set but lost it immediately. He still broke a bit later to win the match in four sets, 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to reach his second consecutive Wimbledon final.
