Alexander Zverev has been speaking to the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast ahead of the Qatar Open about being back on tour again, following a lengthy injury lay-off that kept him out of action for nearly six months.
The German suffered a severe ankle injury last June when he rolled it during his Roland Garros semi-final against Rafael Nadal. It kept the former World No. 2 out of action for the rest of last season, with Zverev only making his comeback from injury in the December off-season at the end of last year.
His progress since then has looked steady, however, and with more matches under his belt, the Olympic champion is confident he can get back to his very best form.
I've missed it. It's been quite a while for me. I mean, I, I think, I don't think I've ever been away from tennis for, for that long in my life, so I've obviously missed it. Of course. There's still a lot of hard work ahead of me. I think it, it is getting a lot better since, since Australia and yeah, I mean, I'm just happy to be playing on tour again, be playing inside of the big stadiums and be surrounded by the best players in the world.
In Australia, it was obvious that I'm not gonna be playing my best tennis. It was obvious that I'm gonna be very far away, but I'm, I'm getting closer, I think, and it, it is improving. So hopefully I definitely feel a lot better than, than I have since the injury.
This is probably the best I've felt since the injury. But again, there's, there's other guys that have been on tour the whole time and there's other guys that, that have been winning tournaments, have been reaching grands slam finals, and all of. But I'm, I'm ready to compete again.
