Caroline Wozniacki may well be past her peak years, but she is certain the future of Danish tennis is in safe hands thanks to the emergence of young and vibrant talents.
Wozniacki remains Denmak's most successful tennis player. She has won 30 career titles in singles including her solitary Grand Slam at the 2018 Australian Open. She has also amassed career prize money above $35 million and ranks in the Top 10 of the highest earners of all time in WTA history.
Wozniacki, now 33, raised eyebrows this summer when she announced her comeback to tennis, three and half years since her official retirement from the sport. After giving birth to her second child, she boldly claimed she still had goals she wanted to accomplish.
Although she only played a handful of tennis tournaments, she left her mark at every event and impressed during her run to the 2023 US Open fourth round. The situation is a lot different for Danish from when Wozniacki last played on tour before her retirement.
Holger Rune has emerged as one of the country's top tennis players and is tipped to win the lot in future years. Already a Top 10 mainstay on the ATP Tour, Rune has won a Masters 1000 title. On the WTA side, Clara Tauson has shown bags of potential and is one of the most exciting young prospects in the Top 100.
Remarkably, both players are only 20. Wozniacki spoke glowingly of her tennis accomplishments coming from a nation with little tennis heritage. She was impressed by the steps taken by the aforementioned duo and is hopeful it will spark a tradition in Denmark.
"Coming from a small country that had zero tennis traditions in the past and being able to achieve what I did and now seeing other young players come through from my country is pretty special. I hope it starts another tennis tradition from Denmark and we’re gonna see a lot more kids moving forward that are gonna play great tennis from Denmark."- Wozniacki as quoted on TV Azteca Deportes
Wozniacki, a mother of two, is also looking to inspire not just her kids but all up-and-coming players back home that age is no barrier to success in life, as long as you dedicate your effort and love what you do.
"That’s something I want to teach young kids and also my kids. That if they want to achieve something, the size of their dream is the size of how much they can accomplish. If you work hard and love what you do, anything is possible."
