Coco Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam a few months ago, but she's not dwelling on it, as her goal has always been to win multiple majors.
The vast majority of tennis players dream about winning a Grand Slam when they start playing tennis, but some of them actually dream about winning a few of them. Coco Gauff grew up wanting to win multiple Grand Slams, and not just one, which allowed her to process the US Open win rather quickly.
The American is playing her first Grand Slam since the US Open, and the goal is pretty simple. She wants to win more, and in a way, the mindset she grew up with allowed her to leave it in the rearview mirror and focus on the future.
Her goal was never to win just one, so as great as it was, it's a stepping stone to the real goal. Ahead of the 2024 Australian Open, the American talked about her previous success, but also about desire to succeed again.
"Now going into another slam, it really feels like so long ago. I kind of forget it happened because I feel like my whole life... It depends on the players. Some player's goal is to win a Grand Slam. Once they reach that, it's kind of what's next."
"For me, I always knew I wanted to win multiple. It was kind of easy to forget about it. Not 'forget'. I think that's the wrong word. Maybe just put it in the past and look forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past."
The Australian Open was never the best event for her in the past, but she's a far better player right now than before. It's a type of court that can work well with her new aggressive play, so we should wait and see how this goes.
The draw gave her a player she had bested a few times already, as she's set to face Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, so there shouldn't be any worries about the draw.
