Last year's runner-up at the US Open, Leylah Fernandez, revealed she has a fractured foot by sharing a video on social media showing the extent of her injury.
The Canadian was in great form at the French Open this year. She defeated Kristina Mladenovic, Katerina Siniakova, Belinda Bencic, and Martina Trevisan to reach her first quarterfinal in Paris.
The teenager then faced Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinal. Although the Italian is a good player on clay, many felt Fernandez had a great chance of progressing to the semifinal. However, some misfortune derailed that dream.
Sadly, Fernandez sustained a foot injury that seriously affected her throughout the contest. Incredibly, the 2021 US Open runner-up still took the match to three sets, but she was ultimately defeated.
Fernandez proved what a warrior she is by coming close to victory despite that issue. After the match, her father gave some details about the foot problem and became very emotional when he spoke about it.
Fernandez's update about the injury shows how truly remarkable it was that she competed so well for three sets. The Canadian gave more details in a video she released on social media.
In the video below, Fernandez is on crutches. This is due to sustaining a fractured foot, a serious injury that usually has a long recovery time, making this particularly sad news for the 19-year-old.
Despite her injury, Fernandez is trying to keep an upbeat tone. That is shown by the caption on her post, which included the left-handed player asking for podcast, show, and book recommendations.
"Happy Wednesday! Just wanted to share a life update, unfortunately, I fractured my foot. In need of some well wishes more than ever. The fight in me will continue just after some PT appointments. Have any good podcast, show, or book recommendations?!"
