After winning her second Grand Slam title at the 2022 Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek used her speech to support Ukraine once more as she received a huge applause for her words.
The 21-years-old Pole is one of the people that show the biggest support to Ukraine in the difficult times as she continuously wears a ribbon in the colours of the Ukrainian flag on her hat and did so during every match on her journey to the title at the 2022 Roland Garros. After winning her last match, Iga Swiatek took one more chance to support the country and people living in it, when she said:
"I want to say something to Ukraine, to stay strong because the world is still there," Iga Swiatek said, as she received a huge applause. "Since my first speech in Doha [in February], basically I was hoping that when I was going to do the next one the situation is going to get better, but I'm still going to have hopes and try to support."
After the match, the world number 1 spoke also about her emotions, when she later added:
"I'm more aware of how it is to win a Grand Slam and what it takes and how every puzzle has to come together and basically every aspect of the game has to work. With that awareness, I was even more happy and even more proud of myself, because in 2020 it was all, I just felt that I'm lucky, you know. This time I felt like I really did the work."
"I try to treat [a final] as any other match, which is pretty hard and kind of not possible, because there are always going to be a bigger amount of stress."
"You have a feeling that the tournament is coming to an end and this is the last match, so it would be nice to just finish it properly. But I guess I'm kind of accepting that a little bit more and I try to lean on the strengths and the things that I have."
