Ons Jabeur will leave the Top 10 of the WTA rankings after her third-round defeat at Wimbledon.
The official rankings will be updated following the conclusion of the tournament next weekend, marking the end of Jabeur's tenure in the elite coterie for the first time in two years.
The Tunisian trailblazer was comfortably beaten by Elina Svitolina in her first match on Center Court since losing to Marketa Vondrousova in last year's final.
The performance and result surprised many because Jabeur played exceptionally well in beating Moyuka Uchijima and Robin Montgomery to reach the third round for the fourth year in a row.
But Svitolina was a significant upgrade from the opponents she faced in her previous two rounds. Jabeur could not find her best tennis in an error-strewn display underpinned by an unwanted 31 unforced errors.
The match lasted 80 minutes, and although the two-time Wimbledon finalist showed a modicum of resilience in the second set, where she held a set point on the Svitolina serve at 6-5, her backhand sailed just long. The Ukrainian prevailed 6-1, 7-6.
This now means Jabeur will lose a significant portion of the points she received during her run to the final last year. In the live rankings, 1170 points have been chalked off, which is enough to take her out of the Top 10.
She is currently ranked 14th in the live rankings, which is probably the best-case scenario for her. Some of the players who might pass her in the coming days, depending on their progress for the remainder of the tournament, include Emma Navarro, Anna Kalinskaya, and Barbora Krejcikova.
It has been a difficult season for the 29-year-old, who has endured the agony of missing the top prize at Wimbledon in successive years. But she appeared to have turned a corner in the last two months when she made it to the quarterfinal stage in three tournaments, including Roland Garros, and was proclaimed one of the favorites at this year's Championships.
