Swiatek Wins Record-Equalling Third Consecutive Roland Garros Title After Beating Paolini

by Zachary Wimer

Iga Swiatek made history by beating Jasmine Paolini easily in two sets to become one of the few players ever to win Roland Garros three times in a row.

Outside of a tricky clash against Naomi Osaka, where she saved match points, Swiatek largely dominated her matches, winning easily in two sets, and the same repeated also in the final match.

Paolini did well herself, but nobody really thought she could beat the world no. 1, considering how well Swiatek had played in the past two weeks. Still, the Italian started well in the match, nearly breaking in the first game and then breaking on her second attempt.

That was all she could do in that opening set as Swiatek broke back immediately and, after that, deployed her machinery, which was just impressive to see. Winners from both sides as well as decent serving proved too much for Paolini to handle.

Very few players would be able to counter a 10-winner performance in 8 games, as the top seed won the first set 6-2. The start of the second set wasn't all too strong either from the 12th seed, as Swiatek broke early once more to put herself up 2-0.

She was simply too overwhelming to her opponent, who did try to play decently at times. Another painfully obvious problem was that her statue really diminished what balls she could get to, often being a step too slow to get to the ball.

After taking that break, Swiatek kept playing her game and finished it off, winning the match 6-2, 6-1. This is a historic third in a row for the Polish player, who once again confirms herself as the best player in the world and the overwhelming favorite to win gold later this summer when we return to Paris for the Olympic Games.

She joined Monica Seles and Justine Henin as the only other two female players who have won three consecutive titles at the French Open.
