Iga Swiatek proved too strong for Madison Keys at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome, extending her winning streak to 10 matches.
The Polish player has been on a tear so far in Rome, winning all of her matches in straight sets. Some of those, like the most recent one, featured minor issues, but for the most part, she's still proving to be better than anyone else on clay.
It's a continuation of her good run at the Madrid Open, where she was able to go all the way to the final, beating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to lift the trophy. She's also inching closer to a trophy in the Italian capital, especially if she keeps playing the way she did in this match.
The opening set was just a superb performance from Swiatek, who bested the American also last week, and lost only one game in this match's opening set, winning it 6-1. There was some battling going on as Swiatek had to save break points, but for the most part, she was very dominant.
The second set featured a bit of better play from Keys, as the world no. 1 toned down her own level a little. However, it was still a set in which the victor was never really in doubt. Even with the American creating many break chances, it never looked like Swaitek lost control of the match.
She saved all the break points she faced while converting the only one Keys allowed her, so when she needed to win a point, she brought her best tennis. The final score was 6-1, 6-3 for the Polish player, who has now won 10 matches in a row.
Ahead of the season's second Grand Slam, she's once again proving to be the best player in the world, especially on the red dirt.
