Swiatek Joins Lucrative Company After Winning Second Indian Wells Trophy

by Zachary Wimer

Iga Swiatek capped off a tremendous week in Indian Wells with the trophy after beating Maria Sakkari in the final, which ensured she joined a lucrative company.

By now, we've gotten used to Swiatek winning trophies, and generally, when she has the type of week she has had in Indian Wells, it generally ends up with her lifting the trophy.

Sakkari tried her best, but much like two years ago, when she also stood in the final against Swiatek, she was beaten in two simple sets.

The win ensured Swiatek her second Indian Wells trophy, and that's significant because by doing so, the Polish player became only the tenth female player ever to have won the trophy there at least two times.

The list of players she joined includes an impressive list of champions such as Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, and Victoria Azarenka.

The latter is actually the last player who was able to do this before Swiatek did it. Azarenka won the event in 2012 and then again in 2016. Since then, only Swiatek has been able to win it twice, in 2022, when she beat Maria Sakkari in the final, and in 2024 when she also beat Sakkari in the final.

It's funny how history is being made because if Sakkari had won both matches, she'd be on this iconic list and not Swiatek. In any case, it's another legacy for the Pole, who is quickly building the most impressive tennis resume we've seen in years.

She's just shy of 20 trophies, with four Grand Slams and numerous weeks as world number one, which she's going to hold on to after this event. She's also only 22, so there is plenty of time for her to win more in the future. It's pretty impressive stuff for a player who stepped into the limelight without much buzz.
