Serena Williams has been away from tennis for nearly a year now, but she recently used her name recognition to help a startup in the UK raise a massive amount of money.
Many consider Williams to be the greatest female tennis player of all time. Throughout her illustrious career, she has claimed 23 Grand Slam titles and dominated the sport on many occasions.
Sadly, tennis fans have not been able to watch her powerful brand of tennis for close to 12 months. Williams has been out since sustaining an injury at last year's Wimbledon when she slipped on the lush grass courts at SW19.
There have been rumors that Williams could return to this year's Wimbledon Championships. Although she was not on the initial entry list, the seven-time champion would almost certainly receive a wild card if she wanted one.
In the meantime, Williams has been focused on giving back and trying to help people find positivity through sports and fitness. She did this by helping to raise funds for a new startup in the UK called Let's Do This.
The co-founder of Let's Do This, Sam Browne, recently outlined the startup's mission in comments he made after the massive 56 million euros raised so far became officially known.
"Many people are often held back from discovering sport and the benefits it can bring them. 'Let’s Do This' breaks down this barrier by allowing people to discover new ways of keeping fit, encouraging them to push themselves, and providing a sense of community and camaraderie in the process, irrespective of fitness levels."
Legendary Jamaican runner Usain Bolt also helped the startup raise the whopping 56 million euros. This story shows just how much impact famous sports stars can have. Observing the work Let's Do This does in the coming years will be fascinating.
