Aryna Sabalenka won the 2023 Australian Open, and she started this year on a high note as well, putting forward early candidacy to do so again.
Sabalenka had a fantastic 2023 campaign, which began in Melbourne with the Australian Open trophy. She's looking even better this year with some amazing early performances at the 2024 Brisbane International.
She played well in Abu Dhabi at the World Tennis League and looks even better in Brisbane. A dominant first win was followed up by yet another crushing win over Lin Zhu.
The match actually started with an early break for the Chinese player, which is funny because that's the only game she would win in the match.
Sabalenka broke back immediately and then added another break and then another, and it was just not a pretty sight if you are a fan of Zhu. The Belarusian just crushed her from the baseline with her raw power, especially when Zhu would send a weaker ball.
She won only one out of 10 points on her second serve, which demonstrated that pretty well. The second set didn't offer anything different because Sabalenka once again took an early lead and just kept pushing forward after that.
Some signs of life were shown by Zhu in one game when she created a break chance, but nothing came of it as Sabalenka took a 4-0 lead. After that, we saw one more break as Sabalenka took the 5-0 lead and then closed it out 6-0.
Just an incredible thrashing by the Belarusian against a player who is not that bad. Zhu is a solid player and likes these conditions, but today she didn't even win one single game on her serve.
That shows just how dominant Sabalenka ultimately was. The final score was 6-1 6-0 as she moves on to the quarter-final of the Brisbane International, where she will meet Daria Kasatkina.
