Holger Rune is back on the winning side by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime at the 2023 China Open after struggling for a rather long time for a player of his standards.
The last time Holger Rune won was at Wimbledon, which was quite a while ago. It didn't happen because of a lack of trying either, as he played seven matches since then but lost all of them. A back injury was the culprit, as it bothered him in most of those matches.
He spoke a bit about his injury after dropping the seventh consecutive match but recently reassured fans that all is well, and he's got to go. It certainly looked like that against Felix Auger-Aliassime as the Dane finally won a match. It wasn't a spectacular performance from him, but it didn't need to be, as the Canadian wasn't that great either.
You could tell that neither are in great form right now, but Rune was slightly better and got the win. The first set was pretty close, but Rune was clearly better. He served better and won points on his serve far more easily, not allowing a single break point.
Auger-Aliassime was competent on his serve but not as dominant and got broken which proved his undoing. The Canadian brought a bit more power in the second set holding his serve relatively easily to start the set. We didn't really see any break points for Rune until the end of the set but the Canadian's problem was the inability to create pressure with his return.
Rune cruised comfortably through his game again, not allowing a single break point. A few misfires late in the set lost the Canadian the serve, and that was all Rune needed as he swiftly ended it. A rather simple 6-4 6-4 win for the Dane, who had seven aces and dropped only 4 points behind his first serve.
