Ons Jabeur's clay court swing is going from strength to strength, with the Tunisian advancing to the quarter-finals at the 2022 Italian Open in Rome.
Following her triumphant week in Madrid, where she sealed the deal and took home the title, Jabeur's form shows no signs of stopping. She saw off Yulia Putinseva 6-3, 6-2 to join the final eight at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, with all eyes set on the main prize in the Italian capital.
It is a run that has seen Jabeur overcome opposition from the likes of Sorana Cirstea and Ajla Tomljanovic without dropping a set. Next up for the Tunisian is a crunch tie against the tournament's fourth seed, Maria Sakkari, with the Greek desperate to show what she can do at the WTA 1000 level.
Speaking post-match on her victory over Putinseva, Jabeur seemed delighted with the result but, more importantly, with the manner in which she won the tie. She appreciated the length of the match.
"Honestly, I feel good that it didn’t go over two or three hours, because I know she can have long matches. Pretty happy that I kept it simple."
Then, speaking about her next round tie against the Greek, Jabeur appeared to understand the difficulty of the task at hand.
"Maria Sakkari is a great player, a great friend on tour. It’s going to be a tough match. I know she plays really good: big serve, big forehand and really great backhand. Our last match was very close, I had my opportunities. I think I’m just going to go for it."
It is without doubt that she is in the form of her life coming into what could be a pivotal period of the season. With Roland Garros and Wimbledon on the horizon, she will want to go into those two tournaments in the best form possible to give the Grand Slams the best crack she can.
The Majors are the level at which Jabeur has yet to fully prove herself. Her best result up until now came at the Australian Open a couple of years ago, when she reached the quarter-finals (2020).
