Bianca Andreescu returned from injury in 2022, and she had a great start to her third tournament of the year.
The young Canadian had previously competed in Stuttgart, where she was defeated in the second round by Aryna Sabalenka. She then moved to the Spanish capital, where she competed at the Madrid Open, but she was defeated by Jessica Pegula in the third round.
Now, she will also play in the third round of the 2022 Italian Open in Rome, after she overcame Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in her second match at the WTA 1000 competition.
She had already defeated Emma Raducanu in Rome, beating the British player 6-2, 2-1, as Raducanu retired, and she had now finished another match without dropping a set.
Her second-round effort earned her a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory in an hour and 38 minutes. The World No. 90 will face Petra Martic. The Croatian player beat fifth-seeded Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
If the young Canadian player wins the match, she could face a tough challenge in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Italian Open, as she could play World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
After the match, Andreescu was delighted about recording the win, as at this stage of her comeback, every victory significantly boosts her confidence.
"It was great. I think this is a great match for me to build and learn from. I'm very pumped. It was pretty emotional. She plays really well. She changes up the rhythm. She hits very hard and deep. She stands really far back."
The Canadian admitted that she tried to focus on her serve, and it worked really well for her, as she was able to lose her serve fewer times than her opponent, which proved to be crucial.
"In the second set it was just who wins the most important points kind of thing. I was really focusing on my serve, to get those in as much as I can because I know it's up and down. It was just a dog fight."
