Iga Swiatek agreed to team up with American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin for a doubles match.
In a humorous exchange between the pair via live feed on Shiffrin's official Instagram channel, the skier didn't hold back from requesting the world number one to be her future doubles partner. However, as part of the agreement, Shiffrin said Swiatek would have to swap the racquet for the skis too.
"Maybe, we can do someday like a ski day and would you ever consider... is there any time you thought about playing doubles match with a non-tennis player? Like, would you play doubles with me?"
In response, Swiatek had no hesitation to confirm Shiffrin as her future doubles partner. Although, the Polish player asked whether Shiffrin would be able to handle playing in front of an audience and the skier claimed her serve might be a dangerous hazard.
"Yeah, of course, we'll organize that. Will fix if we need crowd or not, that's the question because after your last question, I'm not sure. Do you like audience?"
"As long as I don't have to hit the balls into the crowd. I'm very bad at serving,"
Swiatek took part in the chat following a disappointing withdrawal from the 2023 Miami Open. The 21-year-old was scheduled to play against Claire Liu at the competition but pulled out due to an ongoing rib injury.
As a result of her withdrawal, Swiatek's number-one spot might come under threat in the coming weeks as she remains sidelined. However, the light-hearted exchange with Shiffrin indicates the 21-year-old is in good spirits despite her recent setbacks.
