Leylah Fernandez has been absent from the WTA Tour since her French Open campaign had a heartbreaking ending, but she is ready to return.

The level of last year's US Open runner-up in her opening four matches at Roland-Garros was superb. She overcame Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and 2019 semifinalist Amanda Anisimova in her run to the quarterfinal.

Unfortunately, Fernandez fractured her foot during the quarterfinal against Martina Trevisan. Remarkably, Fernandez completed the match and took it to three sets but ultimately fell short.

Playing with a fractured foot showed how strong the 21-year-old's mentality is. However, recovering from an injury of that severity took an extended period, leading to her missing the grass-court season.

Fernandez also had to withdraw from an exhibition at the Atlanta Open against Coco Gauff, being replaced by Taylor Townsend. Watching Fernandez play her fellow teenager would have been fascinating.

Thankfully, Fernandez is ready to make her comeback at the Canadian Open. She said getting a doctor's approval was the final step after working extremely hard to recover from the injury.

''We've been trying extremely hard to get back into shape. But we still needed the doctor's opinion saying I'm good to go."

A few days later, Fernandez held a press conference at the Canadian Open, where she officially confirmed her return to the WTA Tour. It is fitting that her comeback is coming on home soil.

"Since RG it has been a rollercoaster with my emotions.... A few days ago when I did get the green light from my doctor, that was the best hour and a half of news that I could ask for. I'm just excited to be back to compete."

Fernandez is one of the most exciting young talents in tennis, and her involvement in the tournament in Canada undoubtedly enhances what would have been a great event anyway.
