Double disappointment for Gauff in Paris as she loses also in the doubles final

This past weekend won’t be a weekend that Coco Gauff will remember fondly as the American suffered a double disappointment by losing both the singles and doubles Roland Garros finals.

Gauff will surely remember the 2022 Roland Garros because she had a special run at the event. Not only did she play amazing tennis to go all the way to reach the singles final, but she did the same thing in doubles together with Jessica Pegula.

There are very few notable singles players that play doubles regularly these days and Gauff is one of those. She’s very good regardless of whether she stands on the court alone or with a partner, as witnessed by her recent performance at Roland Garros.

She made the singles final, which unfortunately ended up being a huge letdown for her, as Iga Swiatek beat her in the final. That happened on Saturday, June 4th.

One day later, Gauff stood in yet another final, but again, she wasn’t able to walk away with the trophy. Native hopefuls Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic proved better in the doubles final, even though it was a much more competitive match than her singles match.

The doubles final actually went the distance. Still, it was a loss, so it won’t be fondly remembered by Gauff, who had hoped to walk away from the French capital with at least one Grand Slam trophy.

While the 18-year-old was a big underdog in the singles final, her chances were much higher on the doubles court because she and Pegula are a great pairing.

Mladenovic and Garcia are a great team as well, and they’re native players, which made it even tougher for the Americans in the final of the clay-court Grand Slam.

They started well, winning the opening set 6-2, but then allowed the French combo to fight back and win the second set 6-3. The third set wasn’t that complicated for the French duo as they won it 6-2 to lift the doubles title in front of the home crowd at the 2022 Roland Garros.
