Danielle Collins is in her retirement season, and it seems that she may re-think the decision as she made it to the semi-final of the 2024 Miami Open.
The American was a late bloomer on the WTA Tour, with her first success coming in Miami exactly six years ago, when she reached the semi-finals as a qualifier, losing to the sixth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko.
Since then, she has reached the Australian Open semi-final and final, as well as the French Open quarter-finals, and the same stage at the WTA 1000 tournaments in Miami, Canada, and Doha.
However, she surprised everyone earlier this year when she announced her decision to retire from the sport after the 2024 season. The announcement came after she lost to Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open.
Many thought that she maybe said it unintentionally after a disappointing loss, but Collins later confirmed her intentions, and that means that every tournament that she attends is her last.
The same goes for Miami Open, where she's having an incredible run. In the quarter-finals of the tournament, she took on the 23rd-seeded Caroline Garcia, who ousted Coco Gauff in the previous round.
In this match, however, the Frenchwoman didn't stand a chance, as Collins was firing on all cylinders, winning the first set after facing no break points, and converting one of her two chances to win 6-3.
The American was even more impressive in the second set, completing the match without facing a single break point, and troubling the well-serving Garcia even more.
This time around, she managed to break the French player, who she kept to only two aces in the match, two times, and thanks to perfect performance on her own serve, Collins won the match 6-3, 6-2.
Up next, she will take on the winner of the match between the fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula and the 14th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova.
