Belinda Bencic lost to
Ons Jabeur in the
Charleston Open final, which featured an incredible sequence that included a tweener.
Bencic looked good for a good portion of the match, stepping up to serve for the first set at 5-4. She had a set point, but Jabeur extended the game enough to see herself find a break point.
That break point featured an incredible rally, during which Jabeur stunned Bencic with a tweener shot, which she followed up with a spectacular passing shot to break.
It proved crucial as Jabeur would ultimately win the opening set in the tie-break. After
the final match, Bencic referenced that point, complaining that she would have nightmares because of it as well as jokingly warning Jabeur about doing that again.
"I will have to accept the fact, and hope that maybe I will play her in a Grand Slam final and she will not do this. If she will do this, I will k**l her. For sure, I will go to sleep thinking about this shot, like it will be in front of my eyes, but next week I will not think about it anymore because we have a new tournament."
Despite the joke, Bencic was ultimately very complimentary to Jabeur, whom she called a really great player. They have a really good relationship off the courts, and there is a chance fans might see them compete for a third title this year.
"I think she's really a high-quality player, and she really has all the tools in her box. When I'm playing my best, I can try to press her and push her. But I think today she just also moved very good, and she was really counterattacking very well. She did all the things a little bit better today."
