Andreescu Reaches First Quarter-Final In 16 Months At Libema Open

Bianca Andreescu continued her solid run on the grass courts at the 2024 Libema Open by beating Yuan Yue in two sets.

The Canadian recently returned to tennis after yet another injury layoff that kept her away from the sport for an extended period of time. She is proving quite resilient in her quest to keep playing tennis despite her body clearly having other plans.

Her return happened at the French Open, where she won two matches before running into Jasmine Paolini, who went all the way to the final and lost to Iga Swiatek. Andreescu had chances in the match against the Italian, but was outplayed by her opponent in three sets.

She then made her way to Den Bosch for the Libema Open, where she won her first match against the world no. 392, Eva Vedder, in three sets. It was a tough battle with a native player, but Andreescu showed her resilience again.

Her second-round match was much easier for the Canadian because she showed a much better level against a much higher-ranked opponent, as Yuan is the world no. 38.

The 2019 US Open champion served better overall, which certainly helped keep her opponent from any break chances. In fact, the Chinese player didn't have a single break point until the eighth game of the second set, which is quite a notable achievement by the Canadian.

On return, Andreescu waited for the second serve of her opponent, which came often as Yuan didn't serve well. Most of the damage she did came on that serve, and using her chances was also quite crucial.

Overall, it was just a solid display of very good tennis by the Canadian, who is clearly hungry to prove herself after missing more time. The final score in this match was 6-4, 6-4, as she reached her first quarter-final since making one in Hua Hin in February last year.

Up next, she can play against the four-time major winner, Naomi Osaka, who will take on native player Suzan Lamens in her match.
