The 2024 Monterrey Open is the last WTA 500 tournament before the US Open, and the entry list has been released.
This year, the Monterrey Open, also known as the Abierto GNP Seguros, will run from August 19th to 24th, in the week before the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the season, the US Open.
Last year, Caroline Garcia, who lost in the final, took the loss really badly, and that may be one of the reasons why she opted against competing in Monterrey this year.
On the other hand, defending champion, Donna Vekic, who celebrated last year's victory will travel to Mexico to defend her title. For the Croatian it's an important tournament, as she defeats significant portion of her WTA points.
She will be among the seeded players at the tournament, but far from being one of the top seeds. The top seed spot should go to Jasmine Paolini, who has been star of this year's summer stretch.
First, seemingly out of nowhere, she reached the Roland Garros final, losing only to Iga Swiatek, before playing in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, in which she lost to Barbora Krejcikova. These results catapulted her into the Top 5, which means she will likely be the top seed in Montrrrey.
But she may not be the top favorite. Danielle Collins, who will retire from professional tennis after the 2024 season, which will be only weeks after this tournament, has shown incredible level this year, and she will try to bring it to Monterrey as well.
She won't be the only American competing in Mexico, as Emma Navarro will be also looking to fine-tune her form prior to home Grand Slam, as will Caroline Dolehide, who reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last year.
Elina Svitolina, who produced sensational results last year after coming back from pregnancy, is still looking to replicate them this year, and the Monterrey Open may provide her with a unique opportunity to do that.
The likes of Linda Noskova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Yulita Putintseva, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Veronika Kudermetova will also want to add their names into the mix for title contenders.
Still, as every tournament held so closely to a major, the Monterrey Open may see many changes made to the entry list, given that if players have a really solid run in the weeks prior, they often prefer to rest in the week prior to a Grand Slam.
