2022 Italian Open WTA Draw with Swiatek, Badosa, Sabalenka as top seeds

| by Erik Virostko

The 2022 Italian Open will take place in the Italian capital, Rome, from May 9th to 15th, with the best women in the world taking it to the clay courts.

Iga Swiatek, who upset Karolina Pliskova in the final last year, is the defending champion at the 2022 Italian Open. The Czech player, on the other hand, is a former champion of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, having won in 2019, and they are both in the draw of this year's event.

The Italian Open has a long list of champions, including Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina. However, while Halep will try to add another title in 2022, the Ukrainian won't take part in the event.

The first eight seeded players at the 2022 Italian Open move straight to the second round thanks to a first-round BYE, and so the first-seeded Iga Swiatek will have a bit less work during her title defense as she will start in the second round against Shelby Rogers or Alison Riske.

The second-seeded Paula Badosa will also avoid her first-round match as she will take on Veronika Kudermetova, who she met at the Madrid Open a week ago, or a qualifier in the second round.

No. 3 in Rome, Aryna Sabalenka will start her 2022 Italian Open campaign against Shuai Zhang or home player Martina Trevisan.

There will be also a matchup of two former Grand Slam winners in Rome, as the ninth-seeded Emma Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open, will play against the 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu, in the first round of the competition.

Anett Kontaveit, who is the fifth seed in Rome, will play against either Karolina Muchova or a qualifier in the second round of the event, while the fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari will start against the winner of the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova and Sloane Stephens.
