Lorenzo Musetti could have gotten into significant trouble again after reacting to a fan as he walked off the court at the 2025 China Open.
Musetti generated a massive controversy for making shocking comments about Chinese fans during his tight 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 victory against the huge-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Friday in Beijing.
The Italian understandably enraged many locals after swearing when accusing the 'damn Chinese' of always disturbing play by coughing. Making such a broad generalization in such an aggressive manner was terrible behavior.
Musetti rightly apologized and showed remorse for his deeply offensive remarks. That did not stop fans from showing their displeasure in his following matches against Adrian Mannarino and Learner Tien.
An injury forced Musetti to withdraw in the third set of his quarterfinal against Learner Tien. After winning the opener, he was in control of the contest, but the physical issue derailed him afterward.
Musetti would not have been expecting a warm reception from the crowd when walking back to the locker room after what he said during the match against Mpetshi Perricard, and must have intended on leaving the court quietly.
Some fans booed him, but it seemed like the 23-year-old was ready to ignore those and go to the locker room until becoming annoyed by an individual or group in the crowd.
A very evident "Go home!" can be heard in the video as Musetti turned back to the crowd. However, that seemed to come from someone near the person videoing, meaning it is likely a different comment not heard in the video that angered the No. 4 seed in Beijing.
Musetti stared at the section of the crowd that riled him for a few seconds before walking to the locker room without escalating the situation further. He was greeted with more boos as he walked away.
The ATP player's decision not to enflame things further was wise. After his controversial remarks a few days earlier, Musetti could have gained an unpleasant reputation as a bigot had he directed more angry words at the Chinese crowd.
This year's French Open semifinalist will not turn his attention to the Shanghai Masters. He may wish the Chinese swing was over, but that is not a luxury he can enjoy until his time at that tournament ends.

There have been a few heated interactions in recent weeks on the ATP Tour

In his China Open semifinal against Tien, Daniil Medvedev was astounded when he received a lack of effort violation despite struggling with an injury in that match, which eventually led to him retiring in the third set.
Medvedev felt his reputation as a troublemaker led to an unfair decision. For instance, he acted terribly at the 2025 US Open against Benjamin Bonzi but was genuinely struggling against Tien in Beijing.
Carlos Alcaraz had a heated interaction with umpire Fergus Murphy at the 2025 Japan Open. The Spaniard disapproved of the Irish official giving him a time violation and said he had probably never played tennis in his life.
