Novak Djokovic's ties to Greece could become even closer after reports emerged about him investing a huge amount in tennis-related infrastructure.
After the 2025 US Open, Djokovic relocated to Athens, the Greek capital. He took that move amid reported tensions between him and the Serbian government over the tennis legend's criticism of how protestors were treated.
That development meant the Belgrade Open was moved to Athens. Djokovic and his family own the tournament's license, and holding it in the 24-time Grand Slam champion's new city made sense.
Djokovic won an incredible 101st title at the 2025 Athens Open, overcoming Lorenzo Musetti after a thrilling final battle. That effort and a minor injury prevented him from competing at the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin.
In an interview before that event in Athens, Djokovic described how well he had settled in Greece and said that the cultural ties between Greece and Serbia were one of the biggest reasons he chose to relocate there.
If recent reports about Djokovic's investment are correct, it could indicate he plans to stay for a while. The former ATP world No. 1 is believed to have bought a multimillion-euro tennis and racket club on the coast of Athens.
Outlets reporting on the story say Djokovic paid around 20 million euros for the facility and will use it as his new training base, allowing him to work hard in the off-season while remaining near his family.
The 38-year-old was open in his interview at the Athens Open about not knowing how long he will remain in the Greek capital, but this move provides him with a base for an extended stay if he wishes.

Novak Djokovic will try to prepare well for the 2026 Australian Open

With 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic shares the record for most Major singles titles with Margaret Court. The Serbian is already the most statistically successful player ever, but it is undoubtedly a record he wants to break.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have repeatedly thwarted Djokovic's attempts to do that. They have won every men's singles Grand Slam title since the start of 2024, with Djokovic's last Major coming at the 2023 US Open.
However, Serena Williams' former coach, Rennae Stubbs, thinks Djokovic has not lost hope on securing that 25th Grand Slam title, and will prepare especially well for the Australian Open, a title he has claimed ten times.
Many think the Australian Open and Wimbledon are Djokovic's best chances of winning at least one more Grand Slam. He was a semifinalist at all four Majors in 2025, an exceptional achievement at 38.
Two-time defending champion Sinner will be the pre-tournament favorite in Melbourne. The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam Alcaraz has not won, adding additional intrigue to the 2026 edition.
Although Djokovic himself has expressed doubt about his ability to compete with Alcaraz and Sinner over five sets, he did beat the Spaniard at last year's Australian Open. Unfortunately, the tennis legend retired with an injury against Alexander Zverev in the next round.
